The Saint John Chrysostom Academy has announced the Fall Semester 2014 online courses for continuing clergy education. The four courses to be offered will be as follows:
- History of the Early Church: Discussing the establishment, development and spread of the Christian Church in the East and West, the personalities involved, and its influence upon secular powers and cultures, beginning with the Day of Pentecost (33 AD) through the restoration of the icons after the 7th Ecumenical Council (842 AD). The course will be offered live on Mondays beginning September 1st and ending on December 8th from 7:30-8:30 ET (4:30-5:30 PT). Course instructor will be the Rev. Timothy Cremeens, PhD, a priest of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of America.
- Introduction to the Old Testament: Introduction to most important books and narratives in the Old Testament, providing an essential foundation for the reading of the New Testament, and a grasp the first elements of the story of Salvation History. The course will be offered on Wednesdays beginning September 3rd and ending on December 10th from 6:00-8:00 PM ET (3:00-5:00 PT). Course instructor will be Subdeacon Sebastian Carnazzo, PhD, adjunct lecturer in Sacred Scripture for the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College.
- Lectures on the Byzantine Lectionary (Greek and Slavic Usage): Exegetical lectures on the readings from the lectionary from the fall cycle of Sundays and feasts, with a focus on the author, intended audience, purpose of composition, literary context, relation to the other readings for the day, patristic interpretation of the text. The course will be offered on Tuesdays beginning September 2nd and ending December 9th from 6:00-7:00 PM ET (3:00-4:00 PM PT). Course instructor will be Subdeacon Sebastian Carnazzo, PhD.
- The Clergy Wife: Her Vocation and Ministry: Topical reading and discussions about the vocation of the wives of clergy in light of Holy Tradition and the model of the Christian woman in the Most Holy Theotokos. The course will be offered Tuesdays beginning September 9th and ending on December 9th from 8:00-9:00 PM ET (5:00-6:00 PM PT). Instructor will be Presbytera Irene Galadza, a clergy wife for over forty-four years.
Saint John Chrysostom Academy offers no cost continuing education for clergy by providing graduate level courses in a live-online format. Participants need only a fairly new computer, a high speed internet connection, a webcam and headset with microphone. The Adobe Connect App also allows participation from smart phones and tablets.
