For almost seventy years, St. Basil College Seminary has been a center of learning and formation. From its very beginning in 1939, the Seminary has been dedicated to serving the needs of our community. We are the only four-year Ukrainian Catholic liberal arts college in the United States and the only one of its kind outside Ukraine. St. Basil College is chartered by the Connecticut legislature and fully accredited as a senior college by the State Board of Higher Education.
For the past two years, Saint Basil College has been actively pursuing accreditation from two distinguished accreditation agencies: the American Academy for Liberal Education, a national accreditation agency dedicated to strengthening and promoting liberal arts education, and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the nation's oldest regional accrediting institution whose mission is to maintain the standards of higher education.
A major element in this process was the writing of a searching self-study; this self-study entailed conducting a self-evaluation, a process which involved administrators, faculty, staff and students in assessing our academic goals and programs. This step marked a major milestone in the College Seminary's growth. Our decision to undertake this process is an expression of the College's desire for greater openness and collaboration, and gives us confidence in our own institutional maturity.
In seeking recognition and approval of its program of studies from both accrediting agencies, the college's efforts have been rewarded. After campus visits from evaluation teams from these agencies, St Basil College Seminary has been pre-accredited by the American Academy of Liberal Education, and granted candidacy for accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. This recognition serves to reinforce our confidence that our program has been, and continues to be, a quality program. We expect to receive full accreditation from both of these agencies in the near future.
