vatican.va - The Holy Father has appointed the Rev. George Demetrios Gallaro, of the clergy of the Eparchy of Newton of the Greek-Melkites (USA), as the Bishop of the Eparchy of Piana di Sicilia.

The Rev. George Demetrios Gallaro was born on 16 January 1948 in Pozzallo, Sicily (Italy). He studied at the middle and secondary seminary at Noto. In 1968 he moved to the United States of America and completed course work in theology at St. John Seminary of Los Angeles, California. He was ordained a deacon in 1971 and a priest in 1972.
After serving for eight years, at two parishes in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, he completed his higher studies at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Urbe, earning his doctorate in Canon Law and Eastern license in ecumenical theology.
He later worked as a parish and teaching in his Melkite Eparchy of Newton, Massachusetts, in the Ukraine of Stamford, Connecticut, and Ruthenian Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since 2011 he has been the Vice-President of the Eastern Law Society and from 2013 a consultant with the Congregation for Eastern Churches. Currently, he holds the offices of Syncellus for canonical affairs and judicial vicar for the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh, professor of canon law and Byzantine Catholic ecumenical theology at the Seminary of Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh, and a court of appeal for the Archeparchy of Philadelphia of the Ukrainians.
