Over the years many smaller sects have seen their property confiscated. Many different religious groups have advanced claims to ownership of, or compensation for, properties that are now used by the Russian Orthodox Church. Draft legislation now under consideration would make the Orthodox Church one of Russia's largest landowners-- but would also precipitate new legal complaints.
