UOC-MP and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Discuss UOC-KPKyiv – On 1 March 2007 in the Patriarchal Building of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) on the territory of St. Michael’s Gold-domed Monastery, the third round of talks between the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) and the UAOC was held. In particular, participants discussed the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) and further possible ways for cooperation between the UOC-MP and the UAOC.
During the meeting the participants described their vision of the church situation in Ukraine after initiatives of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko to create a single national church in Ukraine. The UAOC participants of the dialogue presented a document “On the expedience of prayerful and eucharistic communion between the UAOC and the UOC-KP,” developed by the Theological-Canonical Committee of the UAOC.
According to the document, the UAOC is ready to change its former approach to the matter and considers the prayerful and eucharistic communion of its clergy with representatives of the UOC-KP impossible.
In his commentary Archbishop Mytrofan (Yurchuk) of Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi, administrator of the UOC-MP, said: “On the part of the UAOC we can see the sincere wish of the UAOC to revive the unity of the Orthodox church in Ukraine. We also realize that the negotiation process is complicated and long, which requires patience, wisdom and consideration of all participants.”
