Arabic outlets report Pope's call for religious freedom

Kuwait, Nov. 7, 2007 (CWNews.com) - State-controlled media outlets in several Islamic countries reported that Pope Benedict XVI made a plea for religious freedom during his November 6 meeting with Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, the AsiaNews service reports.

Arabic outlets reported that the Pope and the Saudi king had spoken about the need for Christians and Muslims to work together for peace in the Middle East-- although some ignored the fact that a statement released after the meeting had also mentioned the need to cooperate with Jews as well.

While Saudi new reports emphasized the appeal for inter-religious cooperation, the Arab Herald and the television network al Jazeera, among others, gave prominent attention to the Pope's argument for religious freedom.
